SEC Chair: Blockchain 'holds promise' of new kinds of market activity 🔗
Blockchain technology could pave the way for novel securities use cases and foster new market activities that existing SEC regulations do not yet cover, according to SEC Chairman Paul Atkins. During a May 12 roundtable on tokenization, Atkins highlighted that policymaking would shift from enforcement actions to setting fit-for-purpose standards using existing rulemaking authorities.
Atkins stressed the priority of developing a rational regulatory framework for crypto asset markets, which should establish clear rules for the issuance, custody, and trading of crypto assets while deterring law violations. His approach contrasts with former SEC Chair Gary Gensler's "regulation by enforcement" method.
Atkins compared securities tokenization to the digital evolution of audio formats, noting benefits like faster settlements and improved accessibility. Tokenized securities might attract brokers due to such advantages and provide liquidity to traditionally illiquid assets. Real-world assets worth $22.6 billion are currently on-chain, with stablecoins' market cap reaching $243 billion as of May 12.
